Experimental studies on sleep disturbances due to railway and road traffic noise

چکیده
A “bonus” of 5 dB has been applied to railway noise in most European Union (EU) countries, e.g. Austria, Germany, France and Sweden. The reason for this is that the majority of international and Swedish studies show that railway noise is less annoying than road traffic noise and aircraft noise (Miedema & Oudshoorn 2001; EU position paper 2002). According to the meta-analysis (Miedema & Oudshoorn 2001) based on data from a large number of studies the proportion annoyed varies between the different noise sources, e.g. aircraft noise is most annoying (38 %) followed by road traffic (26 %) and railway noise (15 % annoyed) at Lden 60 dB.

Spatial modelling of railway noise propagation
In recent decades, population growth and progress of technology have shaped large and compact urban settlements. Existence of huge transportation systems and developed urban infrastructures are among the most important properties of modern cities. In spite of prompt transit and facilitated daily activities, development of transportation systems causes many problems, including traffic, air and n...
متن کاملThe effects of long-term exposure to railway and road traffic noise on subjective sleep disturbance.
The exposure-response relationships between subjective annoyance with sleep disturbance from railway trains and road traffic noise were established from an extensive social survey by CENVR (Center for Environmental Noise and Vibration Research) in Korea. The objectives of this research are to determine the long-term effects of noise on sleep and to compare the exposure-response relationships fr...
متن کاملAnnoyance, Sleep and Concentration Problems due to Combined Traffic Noise and the Benefit of Quiet Side
BACKGROUND Access to a quiet side in one's dwelling is thought to compensate for higher noise levels at the most exposed façade. It has also been indicated that noise from combined traffic sources causes more noise annoyance than equal average levels from either road traffic or railway noise separately. METHODS 2612 persons in Malmö, Sweden, answered to a residential environment survey includ...
متن کاملSleep Disturbance from Road Traffic, Railways, Airplanes and from Total Environmental Noise Levels in Montreal
The objective of our study was to measure the impact of transportation-related noise and total environmental noise on sleep disturbance for the residents of Montreal, Canada. A telephone-based survey on noise-related sleep disturbance among 4336 persons aged 18 years and over was conducted. LNight for each study participant was estimated using a land use regression (LUR) model. Distance of the ...
متن کاملRoad Traffic Noise and Diabetes: Long-Term Exposure May Increase Disease Risk
Noise is an environmental stressor that stimulates the body’s sympathetic nervous system and the hypothalamus–pituitary–adrenal axis, leading to increased blood pressure, heart rate, and levels of the “stress hormone” cortisol. Past research has associated exposure to traffic noise with cardiovascular disease, and the mechanisms of action hypothesized to underlie this association suggest that n...
